Kornati in all shapes and sizes

Kornati are are an archipelago of extraordinary beauty. Scattered islands, islets and reefs with minimalist landscape and scarse flora and fauna. Their beauty seems to be out of this world. Although they apparently look alike, every islet is different in shape, size and silhouette. This is particulary visible from the air.

Take a look at the multitude of different faces of Kornati on these aerial photos taken by Boris Kacan.

Fun fact

The most peculiar thing about Kornati are its numerous toponyms. Every island and islet, every reef, hill bay and olive grove has its name. According to Amos-Rube Filipi there are around 800 toponyms in this archipelago. This is fascinating especially when we know that these islands didn’t have established settlements.

Since these names were important for fishing and navigation, the fishermens passed them down from generation to generation. Some of the names are funny, some are opscene, but without a doubt it took a lot of spirit and wild imagination to invent them.
